Game 5:  Van Hoosen 44, West 0

Van Hoosen made their first visit to West Middle School in quite sometime on a beautifully sunny and crisp afternoon. The Vikings wasted no time getting to work and never let up as they rolled to a surprisingly easy victory over the 3-1 Warriors.

After kicking off, the Vikings stuffed the Warriors for a "3 and out". In fact, the Defense was stellar all afternoon, allowing no first downs vs. the 1st defense and forcing 4 punts.

The Vikings scored on their first play from scrimmage as Spencer Ward ran the option around the end for a 71 yard scamper. After another "3 and out", the Vikings got the ball back and had some nice runs by Ward and Clarence Broadnex and a nice catch from Conner Jean.  The Vikings methodically went down the field in 6 plays and punched it in to quickly go up 12-0. Broadnex took a pitch and completed the 2-pt conversion and the Vikings never looked back, up 14-0.

After the quarter changed, the Viking defense took over. Broadnex had a crushing tackle for a loss, and Michael Mazza and Paul Moceri both had solid play from their linebacker position. There was also some nice line play from Ryan Werner and Ryan Bernier especially.

After a 3rd consecutive "3 and out", the Vikings got the ball back and Spencer Ward had another big run leading to another Viking touchdown, this one by Ward on the left side, behind some good blocking by Jack Vaglia, Ryan Bernier, and Antonino Munaco.  The Black Offense was able to score two more times, both by Broadnex, with fine blocking by Spencer Littleson, Alfred Adams, and some good blocks from the receivers as well, including Gannon Hutto and Adam Polosky.

In the second half, the White teams took over. Cameron Debano had his best game at linebacker, and there was solid defensive efforts put in by Steve Orzbet, Arman Kahn, and Adams.  Mark Sokol and Jack Roy also got in the mix from their linebacker positions.

Cody Davis efficiently ran the offense, with fine runs by Howard Trammal (one going for a T.D.), and a nice reception and run by Edwin Purcell. The line up front blocked well, with excellent efforts put in by Ivan Martinez, Joey Zekaj, and Moceri.  Adam Polosky also had two nice catches from Davis. The White team reached their goal of outscoring West in the 2nd half.

Congratulations Vikings!

Van Hoosen goes for their completion of an undefeated season on Thursday, Nov 4 at Highlander Stadium with a 6:30 start time…under the lights!!!

GAME 4: VAN HOOSEN 32, HART 0

It is always a dogfight with our crosstown rivals to the east at Hart. Hart came in as a 2-1 team and was coming off of a big win the week before 55-0 over Baker.

The game started off on a positive note as Hart fumbled the opening kickoff and gave the Vikings great field position. The Vikings were able to punch it in on a Spencer Ward touchdown and were up 6-0 before the crowd had gotten into their seats.

on the next kickoff, the Vikings recovered a kickoff again and got the ball back. Although the drive stalled, there was some good momentem heading in the Vikings favor. The Defense then took the field and were able to force a Hart turnover . Nice plays were made by Conner Jean at cornerback and Ryan Bernier at linebacker.

Once the Vikings got the ball back, some offensive adjustments were made and a few big runs by Clarence Broadnex, including one where Martin Ivenaj nailed a key block, got the Vikings in scoring position. On first down play from the 24 yard line, Ward lofted a beautiful pass to Thomas Soma in the endzone and Tommy made a great catch….Vikings 12, Hart 0.

On the next kickoff, the Vikings surprised the Eagles with an onside kick. Spencer Littleson jumped on the free ball and the quarter ended with the Vikings in firm control.

After another big gainer from Broadnex, Ward connected with Jean on a long pass which went for about 25 yards. Then Ward hit Broadnex on a flare pass and Broadnes "took it to the house".  Jean added a 2 point conversion on a nice counter play, with excellent blocking from Jack Vaglia and Anthony Munoco.

The Vikings were able to hold the Hart team off the board and got the ball back one more time. Excellent defensive performances were put in by Ward at free safety, Paul Moceri at linebacker, and Alfred Adams made some fine plays from his nose tackle position.

The Vikings were able to piece together a nice drive at the end of the half and with :14 seconds left, punched it in for one more score.

As the 2nd half ensued, Hart managed a long drive to start, which took up most of the 3rd quarter. However the drive stalled near the Viking 15 yard line.

On the next play, the Viking offense got one more long play from Broadnex, which unfortunately was called back due to a penalty.

After that the "White Offense" took over! Cody Davis did a great job managing the clock and the game. A big run from Howard Trammal highlighted the unit, along with some fine blocking from Moceri, Joey Zekaj, and from Edwin Purcell from his slotback position.

On the defensive side of the ball, Arman Kahn, Earl Cooper, Jack Harding, Trammal, and Maurice McClain all got in the mix. Cameron Debano and Brandon Barrows made some nice plays as well.

After the game was over, a "5th quarter" commenced. The younger players got some great playing experience. Steve Orzbet caught a nice slant pass for five yards, Barrows had a big gainer from the fullback position, and there was nice blocking up front from Will Mullinex and Ivan Martinez.

It should be noted that fine "all around" performances were put in by Adam Polosk, Alfred Adams, and Cody Davis during this period.

Great job Vikings.  Now the Vikings gear up for a solid West team…..on the road again! Game is next Thursday, 4pm.

Game 3: Van Hoosen 26, Smith 0

The Vikings defeated the Smith Knights 26-0 in game 3. It was a great game to get a lot of boys some experience. The reserves played virtually the entire 2nd half, thanks to a great first half by the "black O and D"

Great job team for 'sweeping the Troy schools'!

Game 2-Vikings Love Friday Night Lights Crush Rebels 32-8

As Keith Jackson used to say........"whoa golly we gotta big one".

Friday is a big night for football, however it is generally reserved for the Varsity football teams up at the high school. While the Adams Varsity team was traveling to Farmington for the evening the "future Highlanders" were stretching out at Highlander stadium ready for a big middle school showdown with the Larson Rebels.

The 2010 version of the Vikings heavyweight team was feeling good after an opening night win as they hit the turf for this battle with their neighbors from the south.

The defense was stingy all night long. On the opening drive Antonio Munaco and Joey Zekaj made tackles to force a Rebel three an out. Clarence Broadnex blocked the Larson punt and the Vikings took over deep in the Rebels end of the field.

It took just three plays for the Vikings to get on the board. Spencer Ward carried for 11 yards and a first down and Broadnex put together back to back runs chewing up 24 yards for the first Van Hoosen score of the day. The XP attempt failed and the Vikings led 6-0.

Larson could not get much going on their second possession of the game. Jack Vaglia and and Munaco teamed for a 5 yard tackle for loss and Spencer Littleson and Greg Boileau got in on the tackling forcing Larson to give the bal back to the Vikings on downs.

Ward and Broadnex went back to work with some bruising running. Ward covered 43 yards on two tough carries then Broadnex plowed over from 3 yards out for the second Viking score. The Vikings could not convert the XP and it was 12-0.

Larson came banging on the Viking door in their next series getting the ball all the way down to the Van Hoosen 4 yard line. Just when it looked like they might cut into the Van Hoosen lead a miscue gave the Vikings the ball back. Munaco pounced on Larson fumble on the 4.

Larson had one more chance to mount a scoring drive before the half but continued strong play by the defense held them out of the end zone and the teams headed to the break with the Vikings on top 12-0.

The Vikings came out strong to start the second half. They took the second half kick at their own 35 and on the third play from scrimmage Broadnex ripped through a hole and raced 50 yards virtually untouched into the end zone for another Viking touchdown. The score made it 18-0.

After a couple of short kickoffs earlier in the game, this time the Vikings kicked the ball deep and into the thankful arms of Timmy Shayoka of Larson who took it all the way back for the Rebels only score of the day.

The Vikings got on the board two more times in the second half. Ward and Broadnex each scored another touchdown. Cody Davis had a nice 16 yard run in the third quarter and did a strong job leading the second unit in the fourth quarter.

Paul Moceri came out fired up in the second half making several solid defensive plays including a big hit on a Larson kick return and three straight tackles on a Rebel drive that ended in another Larson punt. Cameron DeBano had a nice hit to start the 4th quarter that forced a fumble that was recovered by Thomas Soma. Earl Cooper and David Roy had strong tackles on the final Larson drive to keep the visitors off the board in a convincing 32-8 Viking win.

GAME 1-Vikings 38, Boulon 0

The Vikings got the season off right by dominating our league opponents, Boulan Park M.S. The Vikings showed excellent play on Offense, Defense, and Special Teams.

The Vikings opened the day by forcing a punt from Boulon.  Nice Defensive efforts were put in all day by Marin Ivenaj, Spencer Littleson, and Spencer Ward. After the Punt, The Vikings got right to to work on Offense, with Clarence Broadnex delivering the touchdown on a nicely blocked trap play. The starting offensive line gelled and played well. Antonino Munoco, Ryan Bernier, Alfred Adams, Vaglia, and Marin Ivenaj were opening nice holes all day and firing off the ball.

On the second Defensive series, the Vikings picked off a Boulon pass. Spencer Ward almost had a "pick 6".  The Vikings were able to punch it in and there was a nice two point conversion pass from Ward to Greg Bouileau.

All day the Vikings kickoff team looked great. Howard Trammal had a tremendous day on special teams with 4 tackles, including one on a punt that downed the Broncos inside their own 8 yard line.

At the end of the half it was Vikings 22, Boulon 0.

The second half saw the Vikings tighten things up and they looked sharp.  An outstanding punt return (that was a touchdown, but called back on a penalty) was the highlight, as Thomas Soma evaded at least 5 Bronco defenders on his way to the goal line.

The second unit got involved in the 2nd half. Alfred Adams looked great from his D-line position, and Conner Jean came up with a big hit from his cornerback position. ON offense, Cody Davis led the unit down the field, and the "2s" were able to get their first touchdown of the year, as Howard Trammal raced around the end for the score.

The Vikings are already looking forward to the first home game, which is also a "Friday Night Lights" game at Highlander Stadium against Larson. Larson looked sharp in their defeat of Hart Thursday. It should be a great game.

Scrimmage A Success!

The Vikings headed North to Brandon M.S. for their annual scrimmage. It was a beautiful day for football and a great chance to get some contact in with someone wearing another colored jersey! The boys really did great. Considering that we had only been in pads for 5 practices and that Brandon had a full extra week of practice, the coaches were very pleased with our efforts.  Fine performances were put in especially by: Paul Moceri at linebacker, Spencer Ward at quarterback, Clarence Broadnex at Fullback and Defensive End.  Conner Jean made a nice catch and run and had two tackles on defense.  Howard Trammal looked great covering kicks. Overall it was a great afternoon and a chance for the squad to improve. The Vikings head to Boulon (Troy) next Thursday, Sept. 30th for their first official game and to kick off the 2010 campaign.

We still need assistance/volunteers for our home games…"Chain Gang" (3), "Scoreboard" (1), "Announcer" (1), and "Spotter" (1)….please help! Contact Jack Beall at JBeall@rochester.k12.mi.us
