Adams Freshmen Throttle
Groves 46-18
The Adams Freshmen
Highlanders continued their winning ways with a 46-18 victory over
Birmingham Groves on October 11th. Hard to believe that 8
games into the season is the first a game time temperature is under 80
degrees. Yet this was the case for this game, but neither sun, nor rain,
nor sleet, nor snow can seemingly stop the young Highlanders of 2007. They
truly seem to be a team on a quest for greatness regardless of whatever
battle or adversity they face.
Adam’s opening drive
was 3 plays, covering 65 yards and happened within a flash of the opening
whistle. Chris Young started with a 32 yard run. Chris had his best day of
the season, with good aggressive running that bode well for him and his
teammates on this day. Quarterback Andrew Hammett followed with a 20 yard
run and then a 13 yard TD run around left end to make it 6-0 Adams.
On Adam’s next
possession, Matt Nestor scored from 18 yards out on a reverse left for a
12-0 Adams lead.
On the ensuing kickoff,
Ben Hollett recovered a Grove’s fumble to give Adams the ball at the Groves
43. Chris Young ran around right end for 9 yards, followed by a Hammett 29
yard run over center for the score and an 18-0 lead for Adams.
After a 3 and out by
Groves, Chris Young caught a 31 yard pass from Andrew Hammett and then ran
29 yards for the TD and a 25-0 Adams lead.
Midway thru the 2nd
quarter Adam’s set up shop around mid field. An 18 yard pass completion to
Hollett was followed by a nice 18 yard run by Gannon Pacioni. What happens
next is extremely rare and a once in a lifetime Linemen dream. Right guard
Sukman Sidhu was handed the ball and ran around left end. Sukman made some
nifty lineman type moves and was seemingly headed for the turf when he
lateralled to fellow lineman Paul Mikhjian who caught the ball and ran 10
yards for the touchdown. I guarantee, these two guys will speak about this
play to their grandkids one day. The kind of play that makes Adams football
special, the ones that make a memory. Anyway 32-0 Adams with 6:33 to go in
the half.
Groves took the ensuing
kickoff back for a touchdown to make it 32-6.
With just over 3
minutes remaining in the half, Ben Hollett caught a 24 yard pass from Andrew
Hammett. From there, you guessed it; Chris Young took a broken play and
made it into a 55 yard touchdown run and a 39-6 Adams lead.
On the next Grove’s
possession, Ryan Hess stopped any thoughts of additional 1rst half scoring
by sacking the quarterback.
Stealing is only looked
upon as glorious in athletics. Early in the 2nd half Jordon
Gowman made his parents, teammates and Adam’s faithful all very proud
by…stealing! Jordan stripped a Groves running back from his linebacker
position and ran 30 yards for the touchdown and a 46-6 Adams. Groves scored
twice late for the final score of 46-18.
Now the young
Highlanders face a BIG test in their final game, when a very good Rochester
team comes calling to Highlander Stadium next Thursday, October 18th.
Folks, these boys have had a great season thus far; it’s not easy to go into
the last game without a loss. Bring the family, friends, loved ones,
neighbors and strangers to cheer the boys on next week. The future of Adams
football will be on stage and they deserve our best.
GO HIGHLANDERS!!
