Freshmen Topple Farmington 33-7
Not Sure that the Adams Freshmen will make Farmington’s Christmas list after
beating all 3 Farmington teams this season. This game though started out
much different than many this season for the Highlanders, but boy did they
respond well.
The parents, friends and family of the frosh Highlanders have seen the same
movie all too many times this season. An opponent that starts out the game
on offense and goes 3 and out and punts to the Highlanders. Something very
different though happened in this scene, a bobbled Adams punt, a Farmington
recovery and a fresh set of downs at the Adams 27.
Farmington took advantage right away with the turnover with a completed pass
to the Adams 12, another 8 yard pass completion and a run over left tackle
for a 1rst down. From there Farmington QB sneaked for the score and a 7-0
lead.
Not sure at this point if anyone really questions the frosh resiliency, and
really no reason too after the next sequence of events. Brad Nylen returned
the Farmington kick to their 46. From there QB Andrew Hammett ran over a
hole created by center Spencer Cairo and guard Ayaz Khan for the touchdown
and a 7-7 tie midway thru the 1rst quarter.
After their opening TD drive Farmington did not score the rest of the game
and Adams did not score again until midway thru the 2nd quarter. A 73 yard
drive starting from their own 27 that featured Jordon Gowman running 15
yards for a 1rst down to the 42, and Hammett motoring 23 yards around left
end to the Farmington 32. Chris Young topped off the drive with a 4 yard TD
plunge over tackle Paul Mikhjian for a 14-7 Adams lead with 4 minutes to go
in the half.
With 36 seconds remaining in the half, Adams took over at their own 49 yard
line. After a couple of plays Adams faced a 4rth and 5 from the Farmington
45 with 15 seconds remaining in the half. Coach Spierling called a timeout
and gathered his troops near the sidelines. You could tell by their focused
faces, both coaches and players alike, that something fun was about to
happen. Coach certainly did not disappoint pulling a huge trick out of his
sleeve.
Quarterback Andrew Hammett lined up as a receiver, Matt Nestor was under
center. Nestor handed to fullback Gowman, who handed to Hammett on a sweep
left. It was apparent the play was designed for Hammett to pass. After
looking downfield and with a defender breathing down his neck, Hammett took
off, he juked and spun and danced all the way to the end zone for a 20-7
Adams halftime lead.
Adams started their opening drive of the 3rd quarter from their own 34 yard
line. Hammett ran around left end 12 yards for a 1rst down. A few plays
later Hammett delivered a 20 yard TD strike to Ben Hollett to give Adams a
26-7 lead early in the 3rd.
The rest of the 3rd quarter was scoreless with both teams turning the ball
over. Much of the 4rth quarter was scoreless with both teams playing between
the ‘20’s’ until late in the 4rth quarter. Farmington started a drive from
their own 29 yard line and drove to the Adams 46. Chris Young stepped in
front of a Farmington pass for the interception and raced all the way ‘back
to the barn’ for an Adams touchdown and a 33-7 score.
Now the young Highlanders go back on the road for their final away game of
the year to Birmingham Groves on October 11th.
Don’t read the press clippings yet boys…plenty of time to do that after the
season. Heads down and focus.
GO HIGHLANDERS!!
