Adams Freshmen win 6-2 Slugfest over Lathrup

The Freshmen Highlanders beat Southfield Lathrup 6-2 in an absolute slugfest on Thursday September 13th. This game was a football purist dream complete with tough defense, hard hitting and little passing from both teams.

Adams opened the game with a drive starting on their own 46 that stalled on the Lathrup 20. Adams had a few drives on the day that were very similar with good movement and a stall around the Southfield 20. Lathrup deserves credit in stiffening its defense when it needed too.

Southfield also had a couple of drives that started to build momentum then stalled in the 1rst half that was helped in part by their own penalties.

The last drive of the half saw Adams start on their own 37. Ben Hollett made a superb juggling catch on a 4rth and 6 for a 1rst down with 48 seconds left. From there the drive stalled to end the half at 0-0.
On their first drive of the 2nd half Lathrup drove from their own 40 to the Adams 29. Jordan Gowman recovered a Lathrup fumble for the 1rst turnover of the game.

Adams fumbled the very next play to give Lathrup the ball back on the Adams 40. The very next play Lathrup ran around left end down to the Adams 1. The defensive stand that ensued was the SERIES of the game. The Adams defense stuffed Lathrup 4 straight plays to turn the ball back to Adams on downs.

After a 3 and out, a bad punt snap flew past the Adams punter out of the end zone and just like that, Lathrup chalked up a safety and a 2-0 lead with a 5:00 to go in the 3rd quarter.

Southfield received the Adams punt and started their next possession on their own 24 yard line. Spencer Cairo pounced on a Lathrup fumble to give Adams a lift and the ball on the Lathrup 24.

Adams scored two plays later behind the legs of quarterback Andrew Hammett to make it 6-2 at the end of the 3rd quarter.
The start of the 4rth quarter saw changes of possessions from both teams with neither making any serious threat to score.
Lathrup had one last shot when they took possession from their own 25 with 1:46 to go in the game. The Adams defense held firm once again, and put the nail in the coffin by recovering a Lathrup fumbled lateral to end the game.

A tough battle for the young Highlanders, who rose to the challenge after falling behind for the first time this season.
The Highlanders return home for a Wednesday game on the 19th vs. Seaholm.
NO REASON TO STOP NOW BOYS…
GO HIGHLANDERS!!!
