Freshman Highlanders Beat Lake Orion 14-0

The Rochester Adams Freshmen Football Highlanders racked up their third consecutive win of the season with a tough fought 14-0 win over Lake Orion on Wednesday September 5th.
A very hot and muggy afternoon was the setting for these two very good freshman squads to square off at Highlander Stadium.
Not sure if was the conditions, but the true sign of a good team is to overcome less than sharp execution and still find a way to win. The Adams offense was sluggish a good portion of the day and had a couple of turnovers that is uncharacteristic of this well balanced and extremely talented unit.

On their first possession Adams marched from their own 31 to the Lake Orion 43 before a fumbled snap was recovered by Lake Orion. The Adams defense, which played very good all afternoon, held Lake Orion to a 3 and out to set the tone for game.
Adam’s first scoring drive started on their own 27. 5 Plays later Darrian Bell motored 44 yards around left end for the touchdown and a 6-0 lead at the end of the 1rst quarter.

Lake Orion started to drive mid-way thru the 2nd quarter on a combination of runs and passes that took them from their own 40 to the Adams 20. On a 4rth and 9 Matt Nestor intercepted a Lake Orion pass to stop the momentum and end the scoring at 6-0 Adams at the Half.

Lake Orion started their first second half possession and again started to build momentum. Ben Hollett stepped in front of a Lake Orion pass for the interception and ran it back to the Lake Orion 30. 3 plays later Darrian Bell ran around left end again this time for 24 yards and the touchdown. An Andrew Hammett to Bell 2 pt. conversion completed the scoring for the game at 14-0.

The Adams defense played very well all day. Another Matt Nestor interception along with one from Andrew Hammett made it a total of 4 Adams ‘picks’ on the day. There were two very good goaline stands by the defense on the Lake Orion side of the ball. The defensive line of Mario Roveda, Spencer Cairo, Paul Mikhjian and Brad Nylen nearly scored a safety on two separate occasions and provided very good pressure up front all day.

The freshman Highlanders have made a very strong statement so far this season against their OAA rivals. Now they return to conference play when Adams travels to Southfield Lathrup on Wednesday September 13th for what promises to be another tough test for the young Highlanders.

GO HIGHLANDERS!!
