Game Summary Troy Athens vs. Rochester Adams Aug. 30, 2006 ROCHESTER HILLS—The Highlander freshman football team goes back to class next week with a perfect 2-0 record, after beating the Troy Athens Redhawks 19-7. It didn’t take long for Adams to get things rolling. On the 2nd play of the game, quarterback Tyler Martin ran untouched down the sideline for an 84-yard score. The PAT failed, however, and Adams led 6-0 with less than a minute gone in the game. Thanks to some nifty runs by speedy halfback Javon Parker, Troy Athens controlled possession and came right back to tie the score on the next possession on a 19-yard TD pass. The PAT was good, and the Redhawks took the lead 7-6, with just 1:42 left in the first quarter. The Highlander defensive line started to flex their muscles in the 2nd quarter, behind outstanding play of Nick DeMiro, Alex Martin and Mark Sicheneder. After Athens recovered a blocked punt on the Highlander 13-yard line, the Highlanders stood their ground and took over on their own 10 with 8:48 in the half. A long drive was rewarded when Alec Prechtel scampered 23 yards for the score. Again, the conversion failed, but Adams took a 12-7 lead into the half. Both defenses were stingy in the 3rd quarter, and the final period began with Adams still clinging to a precarious 5 point margin. But the offense got rolling again! After the Redhawks were forced to punt on the opening possession of the quarter, the Highlanders got the ball on their own 25 with just under 10 minutes remaining. But the drive stalled and Adams lined up to punt. But fortunately, no one on the Athens sideline noticed that #9 Tyler Martin took the place of regular punter Chad Gierak. Martin threw a perfect pass to Andrew Morrissey for a first down to keep the drive alive. The Highlanders then put the game out of reach on the 2nd touchdown run for Prechtel, this time a 19-yarder. The PAT was good, and Adams claimed a gritty 19-7 win. The next game is Thursday, Sept. 7 against Lake Orion. Rob Minton Thanks to Tom Martin and Jill Olmack for the outstanding photos this week! |
