The Highlander faithful invaded Rochester Falcon territory and packed the stands for this cross-town rivalry. Throw the records away because this game is all about emotion and heart.
The
Falcon’s took control at their 20-yard line after Kimball kicked the ball
into the end zone The Falcon’s first possession ended up with a punt after
their 3rd down and 3 attempt failed. Senior Mike Hauser signaled for a fair
catch at the 48-yard line.
The
Highlander offense took advantage of the great field position. Senior fullback
John Stirzinger ripped off 20-yards to the 30-yard line and a first down. Cory
Hamilton gained 5-yards to bring up 2nd down and 5. Slot Back Josh Renel ran
for a nice gain but a Highlander holding penalty negated his efforts.
Stirzinger, back from a shoulder injury, ran hard for a 3 – yard gain to
bring up a 3rd and 1-yard situation. Junior QB Jake Wilson, filling in for an
injured Jake Ball, ran for a tough 1-yard gain and a 1st down on a QB veer
option.
From
the 16-yard line, Wilson again ran the veer option for 15-yards down to the
1-yard line. On 1st down and goal, fullback Stirzinger was stopped cold for no
gain. On 2nd down, Wilson QB sneak was stuffed at the line of scrimmage. Now
on 3rd down Stirzinger found the end zone for the first Highlander score of
the game. Kimball added the P. A. T.
Rochester
took their next possession from the 20-yard line with 6:23 left in the first
quarter.
The
Falcon offense went to an “I” formation and Linebacker Corey Momont
promptly shut down their running attempt. The Falcons were forced to punt from
their own 10-yard line.
The
Highlanders started their second drive of the game from good field position.
Jake Wilson ran for a big gain of 15-yards off the veer option. On the next
play the Highlanders fumbled the ball and the Falcon’s recovered on the
26-yard line. They completed a pass to an open receiver that moved the ball up
to the 45-yard line. Falcon QB, Brandon Luczak attempted a QB draw and was
stopped by the interior defensive line for no gain. With 4:15 left in the
first quarter, Luczak picked up12-yards and a new set of downs. A pass to
Falcon receiver Stephan Henning moved the ball to the 1-yard line. Mattingly
scored on a run to get the Falcons on the board. The P. A. T. was good.
The
next Highlander drive started after a great effort by Brian Hollett on the
kick return who ran the ball to the 46-yard line. Running plays by Renel and
Wilson’s QB keeper picked up a Highlander first down. A series of running
plays by Wilson and Cory Hamilton moved the ball inside the 30-yard line. On
3rd down and 3 a blown play on a hand off resulted in another fumble. The
Falcons recovered on the 11-yard line.
On
the Falcon’s 4th possession of the game defensive end Joe Bernard and Tom
Fedolak came up with key stops to force the Falcons to punt. The ensuing
Highlander drive started on the 37-yard line and included 5 different backs
that contributed on this successful possession.
Stirzinger,
Wilson and Renel came up with nice running plays to penetrate the Falcon
defense. Wilson ran the QB keeper to the 18-yard line on a key 3rd down and 10
situation. Renel also stepped up on a 3rd down and 11 to get the ball down to
the 3-yard line and another first down. Senior fullback John Stirzinger
scored from the 3-yard line. Always reliable place kicker Bryan Kimball added
the P. A. T.
With
2:53 left in the half a short kick allowed the Falcon’s to get decent field
position. A defensive offsides penalty on the Highlanders didn’t help the
cause. The Falcons picked up a 1st down to move the ball to the 49-yard line.
An incomplete pass followed by a completed short hitch pass brought up a 3rd
down and 1 situation for the Falcon’s with 1:31 left in the half. The
Falcon’s did get the 1st down and on 1st down and 10 DB Brian Hollett jumped
the route of the Falcon receiver but was unable to hold on to the ball. The
Falcons faced a 4th down situation with little time remaining in the first
half. The Highlander defense was caught flat-footed as the Falcons executed a
well –timed fake punt. The Falcon’s instead ran a pass route right down
the middle of the Highlander defense. The Falcons now had a 1st down on the
11-yard line.
On
1st down on the 10 with less than 1 minute to go in the half, senior DB Mike
Hauser defended a fade pass route perfectly and the pass was incomplete. On
2nd down Luczak tried a QB draw play that the Highlander defense stuffed for
little gain. On 3rd down and 7 the Falcons threw a touchdown pass to Luczak.
The P. A. T was good and the score at the end of the half was tied at 14.
The
second half started with the Highlanders receiving the kick-off. Bryan Hollett
returned the ball to the 23-yard line. A delay of game penalty against the
Highlanders brought up a 1st down and 15 situation. Josh Renel and Wilson ran
the ball hard to pick up a Highlander first down. The next series included
running plays by Wilson and Hollett but another costly holding call negated
another first down. On 3rd down and 4, Renel gained 3 yards forcing the
Highlanders to again punt the ball.
The
Falcons started their first drive of the half on the 26-yard line. After
Luczak gained 5-yards on a QB keeper Bryan Hollett broke up a pass attempt by
the Falcons. After an incomplete pass the Falcons were forced to punt. Mike
Hauser signaled for a fair catch but the ball went threw his hands and the
Falcons recovered on the 15-yard line. An offensive pass interference call
against the Falcons presented an 2nd down and 25 to the Falcon offense. After
two incomplete pass plays the Falcons returned the ball back to the
Highlanders. This next Highlander drive failed to produce a first down after
yet another holding call and an incomplete pass.
The
Falcons took possession of the ball in good field position at the 50-yard
line. After a 1-yard gain on a QB keeper senior DB Jeff Crocenzi intercepted a
Luczak pass. The Highlanders had the ball on the 24- yard line and went to
work on this Falcon defense.
Gierak
reeled off 9-yards followed by a Stirzinger run for another 5-yards. After a
Jake Wilson QB keeper Stirzinger came up huge on a 3rd down and 7 situation
and moved the chains after a 20-yard gain. With the ball spotted on the
35-yard line QB Wilson’s veer option was stuffed for a 5-yard loss. Once
again, John Stirzinger came through with a big time run down to the 18-yard
line. Now on 1st down and 10 Jake Wilson picked up 7-yards down to
the 11-yard line. Another 4-yard gain by Wilson was for not after an illegal
procedure call against the Highlanders. Slot Back Josh Renel ran a counter
down to the 6-yard line. Jake Wilson ran a QB keeper down to the 4-yard line
and Renel finished off the drive with another nice counter
run
into the end zone. Kimball added the P. A. T.
With
11:20 left in the 4th quarter the Falcons started on their 10-yard
line following a clipping call on the kick return. This drive produced one
first down before the Highlander defense closed the door and forced the
Falcons to punt. The Highlander offense took the ball on the 36-yard line.
Running plays by Wilson Stirzinger and Renel seemed to be good for a first
down however another holding call against the Highlanders killed this drive
and forced yet another punt. The snap to the punter Kimball went sailing over
his head. He made a big play by picking up the loose ball and quick kicking
the ball down to the 37-yard line.
The
Falcons took over with 7:19 left in the game. A series of well executed
running plays by Luczak and an untimely pass interference call against the
Highlanders allowed the Falcons to move the ball down inside Highlander
territory. Defensive plays by linebacker Matt Petrusha and Tom Fedolak but the
brakes on this Falcon drive.
The
Highlanders got the ball back on the 30-yard line with 4:24 left in the game.
Renel picked up 6 yards on two running plays. On 3rd down and 4 Stirzinger was
stopped cold forcing the Highlanders to punt again. So it was déjà vu when
the ball went over the head of Kimball and towards the end zone. This time
Kimball wasn’t able to come up with the ball and kicked it out of bounds
around the 3-yard line. With 3:30 left in the game the Falcons scored a
touchdown and went for a 2-point conversion to take the lead. Out of the
“I” formation the Falcons tried an off-tackle run that was stopped by the
Highlander defense lead by Linebacker Corey Momont.
The
Falcons then attempted an onside kick that never went 10-yards so the
Highlanders took over on the 46-yard line. With 3:08 left in the contest Renel
ran for an 8-yard gain that once again was called back due to a holding call.
Stirzinger ran hard for 14-yards and a 1st down with 1:45 left on the clock.
The Falcons allowed Wilson to run a QB sneak into the end zone for a
touchdown. The P. A. T.
was good.
With
1:10 left in the game the Falcons took possession on the 20-yard line. A pass
good for 10 –yards and a hitch pass to Henning moved the ball to the 48-yard
line. With 46 seconds showing on the clock senior DB Bryan Hollett intercepted
Luczak’s last pass as a Falcon and put the game away.
Congratulations
to the players and the coaching staff for a great regular season. Now it’s
on to the State playoffs.
