Adams Freshmen team chalked up their 7th straight victory
and their 3rd shutout of the season.
It took both teams a while to get going. Both punted on their
opening drives after 3 plays. Cody Wilson received the Colts’ first punt
and returned it 18 yards to give the Highlanders great field position on
our own 40 yard line. Three plays later with the help of big blocks by the
offensive line and a great fake by Andrew Johnson (AJ), Andrew Waszak was
able to scamper into the end zone on a
56-yard TD run. The
PAT failed.
Adams
was quickly ahead 6 -0.
On
Troy
’s next possession, the birthday boy, Joel Wentzloff, sacked the Colt QB
forcing a fumble that he then recovered to give Adams the ball on the
Adams
31-yd line.
The
Adams
offense was unable to score and eventually punted. Waszak punted to the
5-yd line. The Colt return man fumbled the return and
Adams
recovered it at the Colts 21-yd line. Another fake handoff to AJ and
Waszak ran it in for another 6 points for
Adams
. The 2 point conversion failed and
Adams
lead was now 12 – 0.
The special teams unit and defense really stepped up. Ryan Crocenzi
was very effective in stopping any kind of return on
Troy
’s kick/punt returns. Huge
defensive plays by Mitch Weiland, Crocenzi, Wentzloff, Jason Finney,
Wilson, Michael Sirosky, Kevin Markey, and Christian Boada kept
Troy
out of Highlander territory for their next few drives.
Adams
next scoring opportunity came late in the
second quarter. Several pass plays were used as the Highlanders marched 55
yards for the TD. Passes were completed by Waszak to
Wilson
(2), Crocenzi, and the 15-yd TD pass to Joe Reynolds at the goal line to
add another 6 on the socreboard. The 2-pt conversion was run in by Waszak.
HALF TIME:
ADAMS

The Highlander
intensity carried over to the second half.
Troy
received the kickoff. Matt Egbert’s kick was to the 7-yd line. Finney
and Crocenzi stopped the return man after an 8-yd gain. Finney and AJ
teamed up on this drive to hold off the Colts. Forcing yet another punt.
This punt was to the Colt 30-yd line and Reynolds returned it 7 yards. It
was now Adams ball of
Troy
’s 23-yd line. AJ ran the ball to the 10-yd line on two plays and then
Waszak ran it in for the score. This was his third rushing TD on the
afternoon. The 2-pt conversion was no good.
ADAMS
26 – TROY 0
Adams next score was
in the 4th quarter following a
Wilson
punt return to the Colts 28-yd line. Runs by Wilson, Waszak and Wentzloff
kept the drive moving. It was Weiland’s 17-yd run that added 6 more for
the Highlanders. The kick was no good.
ADAMS

A fumble recovery by
Rich Farinas gave the Highlanders the ball back on the
Troy
12-yd line. This led to Egbert’s 32-yd field goal.
ADAMS
35 – TROY 0
As time was running
out, Reynolds turned an almost sack into a 36-yd TD run for the
Highlanders final score of the game. Egbert’s PAT was good.
