ADAMS 27             WEST BLOOMFIELD 12

Today’s game matched up two undefeated teams. The Lakers of West Bloomfield had not been scored upon all season. Everyone knew this was going to be a true gridiron battle.

  W. Bloomfield (WB) received the opening kickoff at their own 39-yd line. They quickly tore through the Highlander defense. It took them 6 plays to reach the end zone and put a quick 6 points on the board. The 2-point conversion was unsuccessful.

The coaches made a few adjustments to the defense and the Highlander defense stepped up. WB’s next possession started on their own 40 after a Highlander punt. They drove down to the Adams 23 yard line, but that is as far as they got. Intense pressure on the QB from Michael Sirosky and big defensive plays by Jason Finney, Andrew Johnson (AJ) and Joe Reynolds forced the Lakers to turn the ball over on downs.

WB took over on downs at there own 39 despite a couple of great offensive plays by the Highlanders. The Highlander defense held the Lakers for 3 downs forcing a punt, but an offsides penalty gave the Lakers 1st & 10 at mid-field. The defense stepped up and controlled the line of scrimmage. Ryan Crocenzi and Cody Wilson teamed up to stop the Lakers running back in the backfield for a 4-yd loss. Two plays later Sirosky sacked the QB for a 12 yard loss. The very next play the QB had Finney all over him forcing an errant throw that was picked off by Wilson . Wilson raced down the sidelines 45 yards untouched for the TD. Matt Egbert’s PAT attempt was good.

ADAMS - 7    WB - 6

The Lakers returned the kickoff to their own 34 before being stopped by Taylor Duda and Scot Clemons. The Highlander defense again took to the field and with big plays from Sirosky, Finney, Elliot Ford, Kevin Markey and Joel Wentzloff, the Lakers were forced to punt and the Highlanders took over at their own 41.

It took only 3 plays for the Highlanders to score again. Andrew Waszak had a 9 yard run on a keeper. Then Waszak and Reynolds connected for their second long pass of the game. This one was a 49-yd TD pass as Reynolds easily out ran his defenders after a great catch. Egbert’s PAT was blocked.

ADAMS - 13    WB - 6

WB had one more chance to score before the end of the half. And what an exciting half it was. WB took the kickoff at their 15 and returned it 18 yards to the 33. As time was running down in the half, the Lakers were forced to go to the air after the Highlanders defense stopped their running game. A long pass eventually got them into Highlander territory at the 32-yd line. Adams defense was not fooled by the trickery they tried on the next play. The QB lateraled to the running back who then aired it out to the receiver. Waszak did a fine job of covering him and intercepted the ball at the Highlanders 15-yd line. Stopping any threat of a Lakers score.

HALF TIME: ADAMS 13 – W. BLOOMFIELD 6

The second half started out as a great defensive battle. Adams received the opening kick & was forced to punt on 4th down. The Highlander defense returned the favor forcing a punt after 3 plays. Key tackles by Egbert, Mitch Weiland, Sirosky (with yet another sack) and AJ – a huge loss of 7 on the reverse play.

Wilson returned the punt to the WB 38-yd line, but the offense could get nothing going. Waszak punted again for the Highlanders after 3 plays giving WB possession on their own 38-yd line.

The Lakers QB kept the ball on their first play and was hit by AJ and Wilson for a loss of 5-yards. Two plays later a pass to the Adams 47-yd line gave the Lakers a 1st down. Great pass coverage and pressure from the defensive line on 3rd down resulted in an incomplete pass. WB was in punt formation on 4th & 4 – a long snap count was used to try to draw the Highlanders offsides for the free 5 yards. The disciplined Highlanders did not buy it and WB was forced to call a time out. The Lakers did attempt the punt, but the kick was blocked by a fellow Laker and the punter then passed the ball to an ineligible lineman. Penalty flags were all over the field on this play.

The result was Highlanders ball. Waszak led the Highlanders on this 48-yd drive.  A couple of nice runs by Ford and Waszak moved us down field. Then a 25-yd sideline pass and leaping catch from Waszak to Wilson brought the Highlanders to the 1-yd line. A pitch to AJ scored 6 more for the Highlanders to start the 3rd quarter. Despite a 5-yd Adams penalty & a bobbled snap, Egbert hung in there and the PAT was good.

ADAMS- 20   WB – 6

WB’s return man had a hard time getting a grip on Egbert’s kickoff, but once he did, he took it for an 85-yd TD return. WB’s attempt for a 2-pt conversion was short of the goal line on a great defensive stop by Mike Barber.

ADAMS- 20   WB – 12

Adams next scoring opportunity came after an interception by Reynolds at the WB 41-yd line. The drive was highlighted by a 20-yd run by AJ. Then a 15-yd pass from Waszak to Reynolds was incomplete, but WB was flagged for interference to give the Highlanders a first down at the 11-yd line. Waszak’s run brought them down to the 1 and AJ broke through the Lakers line to finish off the drive with 6 more points. Long snapper Christian Babini set up Egbert’s good PAT.

ADAMS- 27   WB – 6

A huge hit by Crocenzi on the kickoff set WB up with their worst field position of the afternoon. Defensive plays by AJ, Crocenzi, Weiland, Sirosky and Finney forced the Lakers to go for it on 4th and 10. Great pass protection forced the Lakers QB to send the ball into the hands of Highlander Ford who returned the interception 27 yards. Adams took over and ran a few plays before time ran out.

Adams won the battle of the undefeated. They were the first team to score on the WB defense this season. Congratulations Highlanders on a well played game.

Next week the Highlanders face the Troy Colts.
